The environmental effect and fate of several agricultural and industrial source toxicants were evaluated in controlled laboratory microcosm systems in the presence of the aminopolysaccharide polymer, chitin. Toxicants examined included methyl parathion, phenol, pentachlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 1,2 dichloroethane and Kepone. Microcosm operating parameters, including pH/Eh, salinity, temperature, flow rate and sediment/water interface conditions, were based on comparable in situ measurements. Abstract Most studies evaluating the impacts of river pollution in the semi-arid region of Brazil have been geared towards physiochemical analyses, and investigations of the adverse effects of water pollution on associated organisms are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the water quality in the Poxim river estuary in Aracaju, Sergipe throughout the dry and rainy season by evaluating the survival of the microcrustacean Mysidopsis juniae and physicochemical analyses. The evaluation of physiochemical parameters revealed a decrease in dissolved oxygen content in the rainy season. However, there was a significant reduction in microcrustacean survival in samples during the dry season, when the river flow is reduced and effluents become concentrated. These... En la zona costera del municipio Bauta se encuentra la laguna costera el Doctor, cuya calidad se ha visto seriamente dañada por ser receptora de un considerable volumen de residuales crudos (alrededor de 8000 m3) originados por las actividades domésticas de de una Comunidad de alrededor de 5000 habitantes y otras instalaciones comerciales y vivienda que se desarrollan en la margen de la laguna, como consecuencia ocurrió masivas mortandades de peces derivado de las condiciones anóxicas de la laguna (Perigó, et al, 2003, Alcalde et al, 2003).
